    Everyone thinks steam is dead, but dare I say that's was before AC units in cars where a thing. I could see steam making a semi comeback in remote areas. The biggest issue with stream was water consumption. Otherwise you just used 1 direct drive two way piston, no transmission. Couple that with a transmission and a computer system with mechanical pressure relief valves, you could run with lower pressure thus not burning as much fuel to make power. If you don't know the top speed on no transmission steam motor.. you might be surprised

    Cosworth's development process reminds me of what GM did in developing the first successful mainline locomotive diesels: one cylinder test mules with switchable power assemblies. That was mainly to get the injection system and thermal design dialed in so it didn't have to thump along at essentially one low RPM like all other diesels of the day. GM ended up leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else building locomotive diesels.

    Engines that rev that high don't live long enough to be put in a cheap smol car. You wanna replace the motor in your fiesta at 80% of a model line crapped it's engine out? OR you just build the engine out of unobtainium, and your fiesta costs a quarter mil, but still rocks cloth seats.

    Thank you Nolan J Sikes for talking about this company and also Adrian Newey's Valkyrie and Gordon Murray's T50 and T50 S: Niki Lauda. T50s engine revs up to 12,500RPM in 0.3 sub-seconds of a second or 28,400 RPM per second, that's bike levels of engine response rates. Also, thanks for talking about testicular cancer, must be a doozie to go through. I would also like to say that Ferrari also had done this and DRIVETRIBE has done a video on the 3 cylinders 2 stroke already. COSWORTH technically did it first.

    Remember Cosworth built on an established industry here in England. BC (before Cosworth) there were Ricardo, Weslake and Coventry Climax, to name but a few. In and around the 50's into the 60's the same names turn up time and time again, like an exclusive club for engineers.

    Sorry to piss on your parade, but the original DFV wasn't particularly powerful, nor was it that much better in any respect than any of the competition. What it did, though, it did really, really well. It was, after that first year, phenomenally reliable. It was light, it was cheap(ish) and it was small. The size thing helped the DFV to stay competitive for far longer than it should have. Just when it looked like Ferrari's V12 would knock the V8 DFV into oblivion, along came Colin Chapman and ground effect. The size of the engine all of a sudden became really, REALLY important. While the V12 Ferrari took up most of the space behind the driver, the Cozzie left vast spaces for the designer to eek out ever more opportunities for vacuum to suck the car down onto the road. So the DFV's corpse was hauled back out of the grave and the legend just carried on.

      @AdamTheMan1993 Would you PLEASE read my post. I said that the ORIGINAL DFV wasn't that much better. By that I meant the very first year's engines. From then on, the engines were still slightly down on power against the most powerful engines on the grid (but up on almost everything else), but they more than made up for that by their phenomenal reliability and the ease with which engineers could integrate the engine into the chassis. it is no coincidence at all that almost every single one of the best handling F1 cars from the era were powered by DFVs. Others were more powerful, had greater grip or whatever, but the DFV allowed designers to design chassis that could be poised and have excellent handling.

    Other issue is Aston Martin Cosworth v12 is made to accomplish small series cars homologation an much less restrictive than standard homologation in every aspect including emissions. So this amazing i3 couldn't be homologated for mass production cars

    Interesting fact. The 4 cylinder F2 engine that Cosworth built to test the design for the DFV was called the FVA. It was dominant in F2 racing at the time. BMW had 2 attempts at designing an engine to compete with it, and failed. Eventually, they bought an FVA engine and copied it :-)
